Birmingham City Council implements SAP BusinessObjects Strategy Management

11th November 2010

Birmingham City Council has begun implementing SAP BusinessObjects Strategy Management as the first step in establishing an integrated performance management toolset across the whole Council organisation.

The project is intended to help the Council better serve residents and meet key performance indicators (KPIs) set by the government. Once the new solution is in place, it is anticipated Birmingham will be able to give its employees insight into how well the organisation is executing against its strategy to improve conditions for citizens across key public services including housing, planning, social care and environmental services.

The council decided to implement the SAP solution to help it gain a deep understanding of its data through the use of performance dashboards focused on the above key service areas. Birmingham required the ability to analyse the huge amounts of data acquired through its daily operations. This data tracks how effectively the council is addressing the needs of the United Kingdom’s most populated urban local authority, representing over one million people with around 54,000 council employees. The Council had a need for a solution that would enable managers to easily access this data, using it to be more responsive and take targeted actions based on trends and measurement against KPIs.

Commenting on the project, Glyn Evans, Corporate Director of Business Change at Birmingham City Council said, “We have made a strategic decision to invest and build an IT landscape with SAP as our key partner. With SAP we’re confident that we can meet our requirements today and work together to tackle future needs.”

Evans continued: “Performance management information is vitally important for local government as it is how we measure our success against our goals, such as turning over vacant council properties to new tenants as quickly as possible. When analysing activities like this against 70,000 housing units, for example, SAP BusinessObjects Strategy Management can be invaluable at giving a picture of how the council is performing by area or type of property, allowing us to see where we can improve.”
