Metso uses Hyperion HFM for environmental and sustainability reporting
9th October 2006 Metso Corporation, a global engineering and technology company serving customers in a variety of fields including pulp and paper, rock and mineral processing and energy is using Hyperion to gain a better view of its environmental and sustainability performance. Hyperion worked with partner Proventia Solutions to develop a system that combines Proventia's sustainability management and reporting expertise with Hyperion's financial management and reporting capabilities in a single platform and user interface.
Metso adheres to the voluntary Global Reporting Initiative's (GRI) three-dimensional approach to economic, social and environmental responsibility. To meet its commitment to sustainable development in each area, Metso adapted its Hyperion Financial Management solution to manage and report non-financial information, such as emissions and energy efficiency calculations and employee health and safety issues.
“With new GRI guidelines coming out, we're looking at the potential benefits of running our environmental and SDM reports more regularly,” said Erik Tornqvist, Reporting Systems Engineer for Metso. “Hyperion Financial Management gives us one centralized system for running the entire process. Of course, since we have so many types of business units around the world, some need to report completely different information from others. With this solution, we can implement many sets of sustainability reporting rules so that business units can simply adopt them when they have the need. We've formed a technology foundation that will help us conduct our business with economic, social and environmental responsibility well into the future.”
The Hyperion solution also provides flexible views of the data and enables users to drill down into a specific business area and see custom data dimensions.
“We have a wide variety of reports that enable us to look at information from the corporate level or from the individual site level,” Tornqvist added. “These range from plain text reports to graphically intense reports. The Smart View feature lets us create a presentation on our sustainability figures by putting graphs straight into a PowerPoint presentation and then simply refreshing the graphs as the figures come in. This is an extremely useful feature, and we hope to develop it further by creating more pre-made presentations.”
