13th February 2006 This week's real life performance dashboard is from the Toyota Motor Company. In common with the rest of this series, it highlights the value of dashboards beyond the finance function and the ability to draw on data from a variety of data sources and present it in an instantly meaningful and intuitive way.
Mike Burkes, Technology Manager, Enterprise Data Management, Toyota Motor Sales, says, “with Hyperion dashboards, we've obtained terrific ROI with executives, clerks and everyone in between, across many departments”.

Dashboard of the week – Sales and Logistics Management
Challenge
In the dynamic auto business, sales and profitability depend on shipping the right product to the right location at the right time—as efficiently as possible. That's why Toyota sought a way to more precisely measure and manage vehicle delivery across the United States . But with 1.8 million cars to deliver to 1,422 dealerships annually, and more than 2,000 decision-makers involved in the distribution process, that was no easy task. Toyota had to provide easy access to vehicle shipment data and make the resulting reports intuitively comprehensible to participating users at every level.
Solution
Toyota 's dashboards leverage data from an Oracle data warehouse to deliver customised reports to business users' desktops. The dashboard shown, for example, is used by the vice president of Toyota Logistics Group. The red, yellow and green indicators allow him to quickly determine where demand is exceeding, equaling, or under-performing expectations. Drill-down detail about any model or region is available by simply clicking on the appropriate area.
Results
•
More responsive delivery of vehicles to meet current demand
•
Significant reductions in total transportation costs
•
Improved dealer satisfaction
•
Greater productivity for distribution managers and freight analysts

FSN says, the dashboard is an excellent example of an intuitive interface that a wide range of personnel with different backgrounds and abilities could use. The top left hand side allows the user to quickly compare historical and regional performance and the panel down the left hand side gives a choice of performance metrics to view.
Although traffic signalling is often regarded as a gimmicky tool the message it conveys is instantly recognizable and understood, almost world-wide. Displaying the condition of key performance indicators or other metrics as traffic lights allows managers to instantly zero in on pressing problems. On this dashboard, tabs on the top right hand side allow users to gain visibility into both unit sales and real dollar performance.
