Green issues top the agenda again – the England team, BP and even the environment!
What an extraordinary few days. We have had “Green Fingers” the hapless England goalkeeper, the roasting of BP’s Tony Hayward on Capitol Hill and a whole batch of green announcements by software houses. It seems that by accident or design, greeen issues are everywhere.
But to be serious there now seems to be a concerted effort by business solutions providers and perhaps businesses themselves to take green issues more seriously. The BP tradgedy is no laughing matter and perhaps indirectly will help green causes. Now that teh worst ravages of the recession are out of the way it seems that environmental reporting is in the ascendency once again.
What’s driving the sudden spurt of activity? Well probably the CRC Carbon Reduction Commitment Scheme which could affect around 20,000 UK businesses. However the UK is not alone in introducing so called ‘Cap and Trade’ schemes. Environmental reporting is no longer a nebulous concept. The CRC scheme has ‘teeth’ and very real financial implications –costly ones for the unwary. In the aftermath of BP we may be heading towards cleaner energy but in the meantime accountants need to wake up to the new reality and start learning about environmental reporting.
